Shandela Contreras is a poet and social activist based in Los Angeles. Shandela is the author of the published chapbook Mellow Ballads, that move your bones (2021). She is a 2022 Finalist and Ambassador for the Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate and was the recipient of the 1st Place Gold Medal for the Prepared Speaking Competition at the California Health Occupation Students of America (CalHOSA) State Leadership Conference in 2021. Her poems have been featured in the anthology Unum e pluribus,
NPR Morning Edition with legendary pianist Lara Downes, and elsewhere. She has performed her poems in Sacramento for the California Volunteers & Governor’s statewide launch of the CollegeCorps Fellows program, the City of Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti’s Press Conference, Alliance Unity March and Dialogue with LAPD, 2022 Brotherhood Crusade Gala honoring Mookie Betts, and for many more events.
